Water leak inside a wall: how to find it before it spreads
A damp spot, a high water bill or a meter that keeps turning: how to confirm a leak inside a wall in your Baja home and when to call a plumber.

Confirm it with the meter
Close every faucet, write down the meter reading and check again an hour later. If it moved, there is a leak. A damp wall can also be rising damp or rain getting in, so the meter test matters.
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Stain that grows after showers | Shower supply or drain leaking | Open a small section and repair |
| Toilet refills on its own | Flapper or fill valve | Replace flapper or valve |
| Meter turns with everything closed | Leak in the supply line | Locate and repair the section |
| Damp at floor level on exterior walls | Rising damp, not a leak | Moisture barrier and repair |
| Safe to do yourself | Call a plumber |
|---|---|
| Meter and dye tests | Leak inside a wall or under a slab |
| Close the shutoff valve | Water near outlets (switch that circuit off) |
| Replace a toilet flapper | Recurring stains after a repair |
For vacation homes, close the main valve before leaving. See our plumbing service.
