Why does my breaker keep tripping? A guide for homes in Baja
Breaker trips when the mini-split or microwave runs, or for no clear reason: common causes, what you can safely check, and when to call an electrician in Rosarito or Tijuana.

A tripping breaker is a warning, not the problem
Breakers in Mexican homes (called pastillas) shut a circuit off when it draws more than the wire can carry, or when there is a short. In Baja homes this happens a lot when a mini-split, space heater and microwave share one kitchen circuit.
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Trips when one appliance starts | Overloaded circuit | Move the appliance or add a dedicated circuit |
| Trips with nothing plugged in | Short or damaged wire | Professional diagnosis |
| Main breaker trips | Service too small for current use | Load review and possible service upgrade |
| Outlet warm or smells burnt | Loose connection | Stop using it and have it checked |
| Safe to do yourself | Call an electrician |
|---|---|
| Unplug devices and reset the breaker once | Repeated trips with the same circuit |
| Spread heavy loads across circuits | Any burning smell, sparks or melted plastic |
| Note which appliance triggers it | Replacing breakers or adding circuits |
Never install a bigger breaker so it stops tripping: the wire overheats before the breaker reacts. Before touching an outlet or panel, switch off the main breaker.
